If you want to experiment with Linux with a cheap laptop, it's better just to install another version of Linux like Ubuntu on your computer you have now. (I probably downloaded them in my updates)Īll in all, if you want a second laptop, or one that's great for just surfing the web and maybe typing up some quick notes or a paper on the go, it's good. I've read online about ways to restore the Xandros Linux that the EEE uses, but I think EEE has improvised ways to stop that. All you can see is the "Easy Menu", which consists of tabs and icons to select programs. Next, Asus limited the capabilities of Linux. Maybe they figured their market would consist of 5 year olds, but I'm certainly not 5. I have a feeling Asus tried TO hard to make things "easy", and wound up making things like this harder than they should be. I have yet to figure out a way to uninstall this stuff.
Also, this thing comes with a lot of extra junk loaded on like EXTREMELY childish games, chinese learning software, and learn to type childrens software. I plan on buying a big SD card in the future so that I can at least install applications I want. It has 4GB, but I already have ".8%" left, and all I've installed (as far as I know) is updates. Asus still managed to fit in 3 USB ports, a SD card reader, a ethernet jack, and headphone and microphone ports in. It ways next to nothing, and it's pretty thin too. With the growing amount of places that have WiFi, it's an easy way to connect to the internet anywhere you are because of it's extreme portability. 280 dollars will buy you an extremely small laptop with good web browsing and an easy to use interface. People who have never touched Linux SHOULD NOT start on this computer - it would be frustrating, at best.

I gave this netbook 4/5 stars because I think for people inexperienced with Linux, it would be a 3/5 due to its bloated and inefficient distro, but it is a 5/5 for Linux powerusers like me who know how to work their way around and put their own custom distro on it. It also seems to have some issues with vi on Ubuntu-eee, so get used to nano. Not QWERTY-smartphone tiny, but still tiny enough that you'll take about an hour to get used to it. Overall, I'd take the small amount of flash storage in this netbook over the bigger amounts of hard drive storage in other netbooks just due to the lack of moving parts. SD cards and USB sticks are cheap, though, so storage can be added for little extra cost. My Ubuntu-eee install is only using ~1GB with everything I need for my college classes included. The integrated 4GB of flash storage will probably be enough for most users as long as they remove the standard OS.

(NOTE - THIS NETBOOK WILL NOT BOOT FROM EXTERNAL USB HARD DRIVES, ONLY USB STICKS AND OPTICAL DRIVES) The processor is enough to do anything I can think of on a 9 inch screen, and I can get 3-4 hours of battery life on a single charge depending on what I'm doing, which isn't stellar, but is better than my MacBook Pro can manage. Places online have information about hacking it to give a traditional KDE interface, etc, but the distro is still bloated and has many outdated packages.Īfter loading a Ubuntu-eee installer on a USB stick, I fell in love with this netbook. The Xandros-based Linux distribution that this netbook ships with isn't too great. Granted, it's pretty much the same as every other 9-inch netbook, save for the lack of webcam and 4GB of flash memory.
If you use a third-party anti-virus application, you can disable the Security Center and Windows Defender services as well. The hardware in this netbook is top notch.

To help boost the performance of your EEE PC, feel free to disable the following services: Block Level Backup Engine Service, Bonjour Service, Certificate Propagation Service, Group Policy Client, HomeGroup Listener Service, HomeGroup Provider Service, Offline Files Service, Portable Device Enumerator Service, Software Protection Service (only after you activate Windows), SSDP Discovery Service and Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. Press "Windows-R," type "Services.msc" in the Run box and press "Enter." In the Services console window, you can disable many services safely, and thus free up RAM and other system resources. Regardless of the version of Windows you use, you can reach the Services console from a Run box. Whether the EEE PC runs Windows 7, Vista or XP, the operating system loads many services by default that you don’t really need with a netbook.

Most ASUS EEE PCs ship with a full desktop installation of Windows.
